It has not been a good season so far for either Helsinki club, but Jokerit's has improved greatly with a 3-2 win over IFK Helsinki - the first Helsinki derby since Jokerit left to join the Kontinental Hockey League 12 years ago - a result which sees the Jokers go level with HIFK on 10 points.
Aleksi Mustonen put the hosts ahead midway through the first period, but with three minutes of the second to go Daniel Makiaho levelled the contest. Maxime Fortier then put Jokerit back in front, but once again it was Makiaho who equalised, this time with just 44 seconds to play.
That took the match to overtime, and this time there would be no chance for HIFK to respond, after Alexander Forslund struck with nearly four minutes played to give Jokerit just their third win in 12 games, while goal difference keeps HIFK a place higher in 15th.
JYP were on the brink of following up their seven-match winning start with three straight defeats, but two goals in the final nine minutes gave them a 2-1 win at SaiPa, who were knocked out of the top four following three losses in their last four matches, as the visitors climb back to third in the table.
Miro Tauslahti put the home side ahead with seconds remaining of the opening period, and for a while one goal looked to be enough for SaiPa, but they left with nothing after Trenton Bourque equalised in the 12th minute of period three, then Jere Lassila turned the match around in the final six minutes.
