South Melbourne face their biggest test as they seek to prove they belong in A-League

South Melbourne face their biggest test as they seek to prove they belong in A-League

Match News and Current Form

South Melbourne joined previous runners-up Heidelberg United (2025) and Sydney United 58 (2022) as the third NPL club to qualify for an Australia Cup final and will be desperate to be the first to lift the Australia Cup trophy, not least because of their intensifying campaign to take over Western United’s A-Leagues licence and return to the national competition after a 22-year absence. As the inaugural Australian Championship winners, South Melbourne can formally boast to be the best second-tier club in the country, and they have a significant match fitness advantage with their league season ending in mid-September.

They worked their way into this final with a hard-fought win over Adelaide United, their second ‘cupset’ in history, and victories over Fremantle City (3-3p), Preston Lions (2-1) and giant killers Queensland Lions (3-1). They didn’t make things easy for themselves along the way by conceding the opening goal in three matches and squandering a 2-0 lead at home to Fremantle, whilst they haven’t kept a clean sheet in six competitive games, but the iconic club made their intentions clear with a host of impressive signings including former A-League squad members Kosta Barbarouses, Paulo Retre and Richard Nkomo.

Melbourne Victory need no introduction to this competition as two-time winners and runners-up in 2024, and victory here would see them join Adelaide United as the most successful club in Australia Cup history. Club management must be growing increasingly impatient after a five-year trophy absence spanning back to the 2021 Australia Cup trophy, with last season seeing them reach the A-League finals for a third consecutive time only to fall in the elimination final.

Four of their five competitive matches since the end of that finals series took place in this tournament as they worked their way to the final in a most clinical manner, keeping clean sheets against Tasmanian club Kingborough Lions (4-0), NPL NSW minor premiers APIA Leichhardt (1-0) and A-League rivals Sydney FC (2-0). After four straight away wins, they make a long awaited Cup return to AAMI Park, where they have won three of their four Cup ties played since 2020, to play in front of the biggest crowd in competition history - as many as 30,000 people, two-thirds of whom are likely to be behind them.

Head-to-Head History

This will be the inaugural competitive H2H. Souths have a 2-4 record in Cup ties against A-League clubs, conceding 3+ goals in three of them, whilst Victory have won nine of their 11 Cup ties with NPL opposition, six of them by a 2+ goal margin.

Hot Stats and Streaks

Seven of South Melbourne’s last eight matches produced over 2.5 total goals.

Seven of South Melbourne’s last nine Cup ties (Round of 32 onwards) saw both teams score.

Victory conceded 2+ goals in only one of their last ten Cup matches.

Victory scored 3+ goals in five of their last six Cup games against NPL clubs.

Key Players to Watch and Missing Players

Souths could potentially field at least three former Victory players on Saturday night including new signing Kosta Barbarouses, who has scored in this tournament for three different clubs. This is also an especially sentimental final for new Victory recruit Harrison Sawyer, who scored 40 goals from 65 games across two separate stints for Souths. He quickly endeared himself to his new fans with Cup goals against both Western Sydney and APIA Leichhardt.

Neither club reported any major injuries during the week.

Betting Analysis

Melbourne Victory have been defending soundly throughout the pre-season, so there’s value to be found in backing Victory to win with a clean sheet.
