The first battle of Pennsylvania ended in a one-sided Pittsburgh Penguins 7-0 thrashing of the Philadelphia Flyers.
Nick Robertson got the first and last goal of the game for the Pens in a dominant display where they outshot their rivals 38-19. Fourteen of the 18 skaters scored points for Pittsburgh, with Filip Hellander leading the way with a goal and two assists.
The victory was the largest road shutout in an NHL season opener in the league's history.
Philadelphia had four power play opportunities in the contest, but failed to convert on any of them in what was a rematch of last year's Eastern Conference first round clash. The Flyers came out on top in that series in six games.
The teams will not meet again until the end of January, where the Flyers will aim to exact revenge.
In Toronto, the Maple Leafs came away with a 2-1 defeat of the visiting New York Islanders.
The Buds, who lost to the Montreal Canadiens the night prior, got both of their goals in the opening period through Colton Sissons and Easton Cowan.
Emil Heineman responded for the Islanders with 5:51 left in regulation, though they could not find a second to force overtime.
New York had won all three contests from the 2025/26 season, scoring three or more times on each occasion. Neither side made the postseason last term, placing pressure on both to change that fact this time around.
The other game on Wednesday sees the Colorado Avalanche take on the Los Angeles Kings.
